SCULPTURE

Background

The figurative work of Rich Arentzen began to develop in Oslo, Norway where he experienced the monumental sculptural work of Gustave Vigland. From this influence he found his classical functional training beginning to foster a more sculptural aesthetic. The study of emotion in balance became a central theme of his work. He began exploring emotion literally and metaphorically through the fluidity and luminosity of glass.
Rich's figurative work began as a stylistic addition to his classically influenced vessels. Using figures he began to explore the duality of portraying the human form in art as subject and structure. The figures flourished, evoking love, joy and pain while supporting the delicate flutes and bowls which was the body of his work.
As Rich's style matured his figures reached ever deeper into the well of human emotion. There eventually came a point where the sculpture moved beyond the vessels which they supported and became compositions in their own right. These sculptures draw on the skill of the artist and the dynamic nature of their medium to evoke a level of emotion that is truly unique.
